This year’s recipient of the Ruth J. Simmons Urban Education Policy Scholarship is Lauren Sumiko Combs, a member of the newest UEP cohort. Lauren enters the UEP program with a wealth of education experiences. Since receiving her undergraduate degree from Loyola Marymount University in 2012, Lauren has taught working parents and children in Ecaudor, interned at the White House, and co-founded a college advising e-mentoring nonprofit called Read Between the Minds. When asked about her reaction to being named the third Ruth J. Simmons Scholar, Lauren says, “I am very grateful for the UEP faculty’s investment in me and hope to repay it by advancing Dr. Simmon’s mission of creating more equitable conditions in urban education. The theory and skills I gain this year will be key – I’m excited to start learning from my professors and peers!”
